Newborn Photography Safety – How to Keep Your Little One Happy & Healthy During Their Photo Session

As a professional newborn photographer based in Oklahoma City, I take the safety of my clients, including our smallest clients, very seriously. With the recent challenges resulting from Covid-19, creating a happy but healthy photo studio environment has never been more important.

I’ve been a professional photographer since 2007 and I’ve learned quite a few best practices for keeping both the newborns and families happy and safe. I not only want you to have amazing newborn fine art to enjoy for years to come, I want you, and your little one, to have an outstanding experience during the actual photo session itself.

With that in mind, here are specific ways I focus on to create a healthy and happy photo session for you and your newborn.

Newborn Photography Studio Safety

#1 - We Keep the Photo Studio Clean

First and foremost, we keep our studio clean! After every photo shoot, we do a thorough cleaning by using safe but effective cleaning products. We never use harsh chemicals (like ammonia) but make sure to disinfect all potential surfaces and common areas.

Also, all clothing, blankets, and props that we use are cleaned after each photo session.

#2 - We Keep Everyone Involved Healthy

After making sure we have a safe and clean photo studio, the next step is to make sure everyone involved is also healthy!

We make sure that at the time of your photo session, my assistants and I are in top health. We also ask the same of you. If you’re ill or have been exposed to any potential illnesses, it’s best to postpone the photo session until you’re better and have been to visit your doctor.

Naturally, we want to keep you and your newborn away from anyone with any cold or flu-like symptoms, or anything that could potentially harm anyone involved.

#3 – We Prioritize Newborn Safety

I have extensive training in newborn photography posing and safety. All poses are baby led and babies are never forced into a position that is uncomfortable for them.

We will never suspend baby from any prop, or leave them to balance in a position that could potentially cause harm. Complicated poses are composited from multiple images so that your baby’s safety is never compromised.

#4 – I Have Been Immunized

In this day when vaccines are so controversial, I believe it is important to make parents aware that I have received my immunizations.

Not just against Covid 19, but also Tdap. This is important to know because Pertussis (whooping cough) can be very dangerous to your newborn. I also receive my flu shot annually.

#5 – I Wear a Mask

I know masks are not required in most places now, but I will always take all preventative measures when it comes to the health of your newborn. What might be a little cold, that I don’t know I have, to me could mean something much more serious for your baby.

#6 – I Have an Assistant at All Newborn Sessions

An assistant is vital in helping to ensure that your newborn stays safe throughout the session. This provides a set of hands close by so that baby is never unattended.

#7 – We Take Breaks for Soothing, Eating and Changing

We want baby to be as comfortable as possible, so they call the shots. When they need a break so that they can get a snack, or just need to be soothed by mama for a minute, we recognize that and make sure that they are happy.
